Please join the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Intercultural Center as we welcome Dr. Dawn Hinton for this year's Black History Month Keynote titled "Building Resilient Communities: Navigating Unity in Times of Distress." This event is free and open to the public; all are welcome!


Dr. Dawn Hinton is a native of Flint, Michigan, and her educational journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Michigan-Flint. She further pursued her academic endeavors by obtaining a Master's degree (M.A.) and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Sociology from Western Michigan University.

Her commitment to education and academia is evident in her 23-year tenure at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), where she not only taught but also achieved the esteemed position of Professor of Sociology. Dr. Hinton's dedication to teaching excellence is highlighted by her role as the Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning during her time at SVSU. Currently, she holds the position of Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at SVSU, showcasing her leadership and administrative capabilities.

Dr. Hinton's involvement in the academic sphere extends beyond SVSU, as she has actively contributed to the Michigan Sociological Association. Her roles as treasurer and president on the association's Board reflect her engagement and leadership in the broader sociological community. She is currently active in the Michigan chapter of the American Council on Education (MI ACE) Women’s Network.

Beyond academia, Dr. Hinton is deeply rooted in her local community of Saginaw, Michigan. She has been actively involved in various boards, demonstrating her commitment to social causes and community development. Her contributions include serving on the boards of the Saginaw County Defenders Office, Saginaw Housing Commission, Saginaw African Cultural Festival, and her current position on the historic First Ward Community Center board.

Through her academic achievements, leadership roles, and community service, Dr. Dawn Hinton exemplifies a well-rounded individual dedicated to both the intellectual and social betterment of her community.
