“We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
One of the pillars on which our university is built is engaged citizenship. We are part of Flint, just as Flint is part of us. Service to our Flint and Genesee County community is a year-round priority for us. On Monday, January 20, 2025, we will have an opportunity to continue our relationship with our community partners and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as we have every year since 1995.
We are happy to offer an in-person breakfast keynote speaker session three U of M Flint Panelists, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the University Center Michigan Rooms. Everyone is invited to attend the breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m.
We then hope that you will be able to participate in our keynote speaker program and in the many enriching volunteer opportunities later in this semester to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
Welcome back from Winter break! For the ICC's first event of the semester, we have a Lunch and Learn featuring our own Assistant Director; LaQwana "Q" Dockery. So join us for lunch on Wednesday, Jan 15th from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. and learn more about Q!
Q Dockery (she/her) is the Assistant Director at the University of Michigan-Flint’s Intercultural Center (ICC), where she develops cross-cultural programs centered on student voices, focusing on belonging, advocacy, and education. Q is also a co-chair of the Communities of Belonging initiative and an active member of the Campus Climate Team, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
Beyond her on-campus roles, Q is a member of The University of Michigan Voices of the Staff, an organization that represents staff perspectives and provides feedback to enhance staff engagement and institutional effectiveness. She has presented nationally on various DEI topics at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) and serves as the UM-Flint Staff Council Chair for the 2024-2025 year. Additionally, Q is on the UM-Flint DEI Committee, a group that looks to expand DEI to the larger UM-Flint campus community. As a member of the Inclusive History Project, which is a university-wide research project, Q helps document and look into the diverse histories and contributions of marginalized communities within the university, both past and present.
Q earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Adrian College and holds two Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, in Social Work and Higher Education, with a focus on Diversity and Social Justice in Higher Education.
Lunch and Learns are monthly events where a faculty/staff member from campus or a Flint community member will tell us about themselves and their academic or professional journey and also answer any questions people in the space will have for them. So if you ever want to learn more about someone's profession, feel welcome to join in while having something to eat since food is always provided!
